Ka-pamilya, kapuso faction gears for MHHS
board election

July 27, 2018

The Concerned Friends of Helping House has learned a group vying for seats in the board of Multicultural Helping House Society (MHHS) is based not only on the family ties of Avendano clan.

An influential lady, who is particularly close to the Avendano patriarch, is also very much involved in the move to shape the composition of the board in the July 28 election.

We’re talking here of insurance agent Norilyn de los Reyes, said to be a dear friend of Tomas Avendano, CEO and president of MHHS.

The Concerned Friends of Helping House earlier narrated in a previous post that many caregivers have turned their backs away from MHHS because they are being sold costly insurance policies.

We can now say that that insurance agent is no less than Norilyn de los Reyes.

It is not surprising that Norilyn’s sister Dorothy de los Reyes is also running for board director in the slate of Tomas Avendano.

If there’s any doubt about how close the de los Reyes family is to Tomas Avendano, this is settled by the  fact that they share the same residence as Tomas Avendano.

Also included in the slate are Avendano’s brother Demetrio or Demi, and son Benedicto or Benny.

With the Avendanos and de los Reyeses working together, hindi lang kapamilya or Kamaganak Inc. ang nangyayari sa MHHS.

Kapuso na rin ang involved sa pagpapatakbo ng MHHS.
The remainder of the Avendano slate are Marilou Yodogawa, Mitzie Echague, Janet Teves, Erlinda Cruz, Susan Panlican, Marcela Reyes, Teresita Tang, and Patricia Diamzon.

M.H.H.S. Foundation Records Needs to be Audited

July 25, 2018

Since The Multicultural Helping House (M.H.H.S.) Foundation is in charge of all the rent
collected in the MHHS Center. This includes all rent collected from the Respite Housing, rent
paid by the MHHS Society to the M.H.H.S. Foundation for purpose of the use of the Center for
its program operations, and From the Charity Information as reported to Canada Revenue Agency through the Information Charity Return, parang may kulang ang pagreport ng rental income.

Here are the rental income as reported by the M.H.H.S. Foundation from 2015 – 2017 (listed most
recent to older):

In 2017, Rental Income reported by M.H.H.S Charitable Foundation is $36,613. This can be seen from
the report attached from the Registered Charity Information Return as reported in the Canada Revenue
Agency website.

However, the MHHS Society paid the Foundation total rent in 2017 of $68,324.
This would mean that there is undeposited money of $31,711 that remains undeposited at the end of
2017.

In addition, this does not take into account the rent paid by the renters of the respite housing as well as
renters of the other tenants such as the Church rental for purpose of Sunday Service. A generous
estimate for this would approximately be $2,500 per month or $30,000 per year.

In 2016,  Rental Income reported by M.H.H.S Charitable Foundation is $80,781. This can be seen from
the report attached from the Registered Charity Information Return as reported in the Canada Revenue
Agency website.

However, the MHHS Society paid the Foundation total rent in 2016 of $62,313.
If we add to this amount the estimated rent paid by the renters of the respite housing as well as renters
of the other tenants such as the Church rental for purpose of Sunday Service, which we estimate to be is
$30,000 per year, then the M.H.H.S. Foundation should have reported a total of $92,313. The missing
estimated discrepancy in the actual deposit of M.H.H.S. Charitable Foundation is $11,632.

In 2015 , Rental Income reported by M.H.H.S Charitable Foundation is $88,617. This can be seen from
the report attached from the Registered Charity Information Return as reported in the Canada Revenue
Agency website.

However, the MHHS Society paid the Foundation total rent in 2016 of $51,647.

If we add to this amount the estimated rent paid by the renters of the respite housing as well as renters
of the other tenants such as the Church rental for purpose of Sunday Service, which we estimate to be is
$30,000 per year, then the M.H.H.S. Foundation should have reported a total of $81,647. There is no
missing estimated discrepancy in the actual deposit of M.H.H.S. Charitable Foundation for the year
2015. It must be remembered that, in the year 2015, MHHS employed a salaried custodian of the Rental
Operations of M.H.H.S. Foundation.

Conclusion:

In 2017, there is an actual lack of rental deposits into the M.H.H.S. Foundation Account. This needs to
be audited.

In 2016, there is a perceived lack of rental deposits into the M.H.H.S. Foundation Account by
approximately $11,600. This needs to be reviewed.

In 2015, there is no perceived lack of rental deposits into the M.H.H.S. Foundation Account. In this year,
a custodian for the rental operations was on staff.

With the exception of the estimated respite housing rental income, the rental income as shown is as
stated in the Registered Charity Information Return as submitted to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Printouts of these reports are presented for your review. Katubayan po na based sa facts ang reported
information ditto.

The M.H.H.S. Charitable Foundation has not undergone an audit since its inception. Collection and
receipt procedures as well as reporting procedures are severely lacking.

The M.H.H.S. Charitable Foundation owns the MHHS Center (land and building). Baka
mawala ang Center natin dahil sa mis-management ng M.H.H.S. Charitable Foundation.

Helping a lady agent and close friend: Life insurance-for-service scheme at Helping House

July 20, 2018

There are ongoing stories that the caregiver group of the Multicultural Helping House Society (MHHS) is in the business of selling life insurance.

The business is known to be run by a close lady friend of a prominent leader of MHHS. The woman is an insurance agent.

Hint: the MHHS leader, who is dear to the lady, is regarded by many as a ‘father’.

Yes, you’ve probably guessed it right. It’s Tomas ‘Tatay Tom’ Avendano.

What’s more, Tatay Tom is very much involved in the marketing of this insurance.

Tatay Tom has not explained the full extent of his participation in the insurance business, but it is clear that has not segregated himself from this venture.

Anyway, many caregivers have already expressed that they do not wish to be a member of MHHS caregivers due to the fact that the prerequisite to join is to buy life insurance from the MHHS management.

These are confirmed by caregivers who are newly arrived in Vancouver, and are seeking help in their settlement with MHHS, a charitable organization whose main mandate is to help newcomers to Canada.

Those caregivers would have nothing to do with MHHS.

MHHS receives funds from the federal, provincial, and municipal governments, so it can render its services for free.

Walang bayad, walang kapalit. Serbisyong publiko lang dapat.

The MHHS has no business selling insurance to caregivers or to anyone for that matter.

Worse, there are further confirmed stories that should the caregiver decide to stop paying the premiums and opt out of the insurance plan that they have signed into due to the monthly financial burden it has caused, they are suddenly found to be no longer welcome as a member of the MHHS caregiver group.

This means: no life insurance, no honey. Hindi na sila welcome sa Helping House.

The premium payments for the life insurance sold to caregivers begin at $200 per month.

For other people, $200 may not mean much. But for caregivers, the amount is a huge burden. Mabigat.

Let us remember that this required insurance payment is significant to a caregiver who earns minimum wage, plus has a family to support back home in the Philippines.

Dapat tulungan sila, hindi bentahan ng insurance.
